war nickles destroyed at the end of the war
I was talking with my local coin dealer about the war nickels. He said that out of the almost 1 billion war nickels that were struck during the war (I'm not sure on the exact number, can someone check their red book, please. I don't own one.), that about 1/3 of them were sent to the bottom of the ocean at the end of the war. So in reality, the grand total shown in the red book should be only 1/3 as much as what it says.
Has anyone else heard this tale? Why would our crazy government do such a thing as this?
